Branding may just seem like pretty visuals, making your brand look good visually however branding has a hidden power. Imagine two businesses offering the same products to the same customers, there is no difference in pricing or anything else that would make people choose one over the other. One has a meaningful, recognisable brand and the other feels scattered and inconsistent. Which brand are you more likely to trust and buy form?We value good branding more than we realise. Do you purchase Apple or Android, Coke or Pepsi, McDonalds or Hungry Jacks? The choices we make have far more to do with branding than anything else. We identify with certain brands and feel greater trust towards certain brands based on how we perceive them and how we see them in relation to ourselves.

This is even more important for small online business. We don’t have the budget for big brand recognition ads, or the face to face contact to build trust. We need to build trust with less, and the most powerful way to do that is through our branding.

Branding is what helps connect us to our audience. It builds trust, helps them better understand our business and become more recognisable and familiar.

Are you more likely to buy a product you are after from a poorly branded website or a site that looks well branded and professional? Even if the branded site charges more, we tend to feel more trusting of such sites. It sets a tone and shows you are not only serious about your business but also have an understanding of your audience.

The Psychology Behind Consistency: Why it Works

We are all wired to trust the familiar. However it takes about 7 exposures to something for it to begin to fell familiar.

If you want to build familiarity with your audience so they grow to trust you it requires them being repeatedly exposed to your brand message and visuals. Which means you need to have a strong consistent and cohesive brand so that at every touch point the familiarity grows.

This will give people are greater sense that your business is reliable and trustworthy.

Branding also creates an emotional connection. A clear and consistent message and visuals that your audience feels a connection to will draw them in and build trust and loyalty. This is why it is important to intertwine deeper messaging into your branding, the things your audience can connect with.

You want to share your story, your personality, your brand values, your mission and why into your branding as well as things that show you understand your audience and their needs and dreams. When you do this it creates that strong emotional connection. The right people feel drawn to connected to your brand.

Clarity in Branding: What it Means and Why it Matters

Clarity in branding is about fully understanding your brands message and communicating it clearly through

Your branding so that the right people know that your brand is for them and it is clear what your offer and how you run your business.

Without clarity, you feel lost in the direction and style of your branding and people feel confused about who you are and who you are for and what you are offering.

People need clarity to make decisions. If you want them to understand that you have what they need and that your offers are perfect for someone like them there needs to be clear communication.

Without clarity you may find yourself attracting the wrong people, having people confused about what your offer or even not realise you offer certain things and the right people scrolling by without realising you are in fact exactly what they were looking for.

This is why it is so important for you to get clear on what your brand should communicate and then clearly communicate it through your branding.

Brands That Have Thrived on Consistency

Andrea Victory-LaCasse followed my process of getting clear on her brand foundations to create a strong clear brand identity and she said

"Before I kept changing things and getting stuck and second guessing myself. Even the whole direction of the business had all these tangents. It was pretty but didn't make sense.

Then with Tabitha's help, I looked at what is really important to me and how I can connect my unique self with my customer’s needs. Taking this time to go through all the questions and think things through made ideas and thoughts clear to me that I wouldn't have taken seriously before.

I wake up every morning excited to work on my business. I'm no longer apprehensive that I'm working on the wrong thing. Starting a new business is challenging and there's lots of room for self-doubt and wandering into “instant inspiration”.

Once I put the work in I felt even more clarity around how I can serve my customers.

Now I love my brand style! It's bright and alive and sophisticated. A style I wasn't sure how to capture before. What is interesting is that I had wanted to use some of the colours and fonts I ended up choosing, but wasn't sure how they would work in the past. I now understood how my taste and style is something my customers are seeking and that I don't have to force myself into a look that doesn't represent what my brand is all about.

Maybe you have felt the same, lost in your brand direction and always going off on tangents because your brand lacks the clarity needed to build a strong consistent brand.

The Tangible Business Benefits of Consistent Branding

1. You look credible. When your brand is consistent it looks more professional and builds your credibility so that people trust your business. Trust is essential for growth and gaining your dream customers. A customer is much more likely to return and even tell others about your brand when they have a strong, recognisable connection to the brand.

2. Customer will keep coming back for more. It is much easier as a business owner to ell more to existing customers than gain new customers. So for strong business growth you want people to keep coming back for more, this si done by creating an amazing memorable branded experience for your customers, and having a strong, recognisable brand they can connect with on an emotional and identity level.

3. Increases your conversion rates. When you branding is clear and the right customers understand who you are and what you offer, you avoid confusion and make more sales. If it takes someone too long to figure your brand out or they are confused, you are much more likely to lose them.

4. It is scalable. As your business grows your messaging and brand identity remain aligned and consistent. It gets stronger as you become seen in more places and build momentum. The longer you stay consistent with your branding the more it builds a strong and recognisable brand.

How you can Make your Branding Clear and Consistent.

1. Audit what you have right now. Take a look at your current branding and asses if it is consistent across platforms and over time. Do you keep changing things or have a clear identity? Does your brand reflect your current brand message and offers?

2. Create a Brand Style Guide. Create clear guidelines for your brand including all your brand elements, colours and fonts and how they should be used. Also include information on your brand messaging so that you have guidelines for staying consistent. Make sure you refer to these guides to stay on brand.
